After the initial recording session at Westside, Depeche Mode returned to the familiar territory of Hansa Studios in Berlin, with its unique ambience leaving its mark on tracks such as 'A Question Of Time'. "It's difficult to say what effect the studio had on the end results but Hansa definitely had an atmosphere about it - not only because of its location in an almost derelict part of the city (right by the wall with East German guards looking on from their towers) but more because of the great building and studio 2 with it's very special big recording room and staircase. Some of the most important albums of my generation were recorded there such as the major Bowie LPs, 'Low' and 'Heroes'. It's all changed now of course because that whole part of Berlin has been completely rebuilt."
