A website devoted to the release is now live at : http://bluray.recoil.co.uk This site will continue to be updated with additional news about the project, including more complete details of extra downloads, an exclusive Recoil USB stick with additional content, Blu-ray player recommendations and other technical information, so please keep checking in there.

Note : It has been decided to limit the main format to Blu-ray because the film works infinitely better at its highest resolution and Alan does not want to compromise this aspect.  Secondly, Blu-ray players are cheap and simple to install these days.  If you haven't upgraded yet, now is the time to do so!

Background :

‘A Strange Hour’ was presented during 2010 and 2011 in 52 cities across the world as part of the ‘Selected Events’ tour to celebrate 25 years of the Recoil project.

Says Alan : "The idea to take Recoil out on the road evolved during the release of 'Selected' in 2010. The events were not so much ‘live’ band but more art installation featuring stripped down, edited sections from many Recoil remixes and alternative versions. For the presentations, I managed to gather together filmmakers from as far as Russia, via the Czech Republic and Hungary, all the way to Argentina.

One of the most memorable moments of the entire tour came about, strangely enough, through adversity.  Who can forget 'Eyjafjallajökull' and the major headaches and logistical nightmares it caused?  Back in April 2010, the Icelandic mountain awoke, spewing its contents into the stratosphere and reaping havoc on the very same day Recoil was due to fly from London to Budapest.  After an eternal struggle via airports, train stations, traffic jams, manic phone calls and confusion all round, 12 hours after leaving home my team and I found ourselves back on my own doorstep having got precisely zero kilometers towards the Hungarian capital.  The last resort and only option was to drive (in my own car) through the channel tunnel and no less than 7 countries from West Sussex to Diesel club, Budapest - a journey of some 21 hours non stop. Word got around (while others were canceling shows left, right and centre) that, against all the odds, we were on our way - and when we arrived with about 1 hour to spare, what greeted us was one of the most vociferous and appreciative crowds on the whole tour.

To cut a long story short, we wanted to come back, not least to finally see a little of this beautiful city, but most of all to play once again to the warm Hungarian public. The second Budapest presentation and last of 2010 was held in the beautiful newly-renovated Szikra venue. To celebrate this end of year special show we decided to install an extra large fully professional cinema screen and projector. The screen measured a giant 8 x 5 meters and covered the entire stage area.

The performance was filmed using the latest high-definition technology in order to capture the event in its full glory. For this (with the help of the local promoters), the team from Umatik was recruited, headed up by director Attila (‘Atus’) Herkó, and in a similar way to the stage projections, we worked remotely on the editing - I gave feedback to rough edits which Atus sent to me whilst Paul Kendall and I simultaneously worked on the surround sound mix, and everything was refined from there. I think you will agree Attila’s film is stunning and offers a captivating and exhilarating document of ‘A Strange Hour’.

09/03/12 - RECOIL LIVE CONCERT FILM : ‘A Strange Hour in Budapest’ – release news

Plans are almost complete to make available a concert film from Recoil, entitled 'A Strange Hour in Budapest'. 'A Strange Hour' was presented during 2010 & 2011 in 52 cities across the world as part of the Selected Events tour to celebrate 25 years of the Recoil project.

Says Alan: "The idea to take Recoil out on the road evolved during the release of 'Selected' in 2010. The events were not so much ‘live’ band but more art installation featuring stripped down, edited sections from many Recoil remixes and alternative versions. For the presentations, I managed to gather together filmmakers from as far as Russia, via the Czech Republic and Hungary, all the way to Argentina.

The second Budapest presentation (and last of 2010) was held in the beautiful newly-renovated Szikra venue. To celebrate this end of year special show we decided to install an extra large fully professional cinema screen and projector. The performance was filmed by Attila Herkó and his team using the latest high-definition technology in order to capture the event in its full glory. I think you will agree the results are stunning and offer a captivating and exhilarating document of ‘A Strange Hour’."

The proposed package will feature the full concert film, running at approximately 84 minutes in HD resolution and with 5.1 & stereo audio options. Also included will be some extra promo films and live projections. It has been decided to limit the format to Blu-ray only for a couple of reasons - the main being that the film works infinitely better at its highest resolution and we don't want to compromise this aspect. Secondly, Blu-ray players are cheap and simple to install these days. If you haven't upgraded yet, now is the time to do so! In due course we will recommend a few of our favourite machines at varying budgets.

The exact release date has yet to be determined but we hope to announce this very soon.

Title: A Strange Hour in Budapest

We will bring you further details about the release and how to purchase soon.

15/02/12 - SPC ECO, a project worth checking out

Alan recently hooked up with one of his old cohorts - Dean Garcia (ex of Curve). Dean played bass and guitar on several tracks from Recoil's 'Liquid' album and has recently contributed to one of Recoil's submissions for the upcoming Talk Talk tribute album 'Spirit Of Talk Talk'. Curve sadly disbanded but it doesn't mean that Dean hasn't been busy since then. Far from it. Amongst many, we were very excited to hear about his current project - SPC ECO - and wanted to give it a good old plug here. Spc Eco is a real family affair with his own daughter Rose Berlin on lead vocals.

Follow the links below to find out more - there's a free download - and don't forget to also download the latest album 'You Tell Me' which is highly recommended by Alan.

14/02/12 - Talk Talk tribute album and book - new update

Following the recent news about the book, Fierce Panda have announced more details about the upcoming Talk Talk tribute album 'Spirit of Talk Talk'.

Here is a summary of the info released by the record company.

Well we've been keeping it under our furry hat but the truth will always out. And so it is that likes of Pitchfork have picked up on the factette that we have been working on in our top secret bunker - a compilation tribute album to those abstract '80s wonders TALK TALK. It was 1982 when Mark Hollis and pals first soared into view with a slew of deceptively commercial hit singles. However by the time Talk Talk delivered the seminal 'The Colour Of Spring' album, which brilliantly merged pop instinct with experimental flair, they'd long since shed any hint of being mere also (Duran Du)rans.

After then - in a career shift eerily similar to that of future labelmates Radiohead - Hollis and co turned their backs on the mainstream and made three albums (two as Talk Talk, one solo) of breathtaking scope and mind-blowing minimalism before completely fading from view. The compilation album entitled 'Spirit Of Talk Talk' is a mighty affair which, in testament to Talk Talk's 30th anniversary, will feature artists, acts and personalities including King Creosote, Recoil, Jason Lytle, Zero 7, Linton Kwesi Johnson, White Belt Yellow Tag, Joan As Policewoman, Electric Soft Parade, Goldheart Assembly and many, many more guests from Bon Iver to Arcade Fire covering close to 30 Talk Talk tunes from 'Today' via 'Life's What You Make It' to 'After The Flood'.

The album is slated for release on May 28th on double CD and download and will be accompanied by a lavish book, also called 'Spirit Of Talk Talk', which features eulogies from, among others, the likes of Guy Garvey (Elbow), Richard Wright (Pink Floyd), Karl Hyde (Underworld), Wild Beasts and James Lavelle (UNKLE). The artwork for both artefacts is provided by original Talk Talk illustrator James Marsh and the book features all manner of Mark Hollis-related delights for music lovers old and new to swoon over, such as lost photos and handwritten lyric sheets. There is also a plan to feature a Roll Of Honour listing the names of fans who pre-order the book.

http://fiercepanda.co.uk

Here at Shunt we will let you know the exact track listing once everything has been finalised and approved. To help keep the quality as high as possible, in his own meticulous and pedantic way, Alan has been helping out as music supervisor and is currently involved in the compiling and mastering process.

He says: "It's already proving quite a complicated process collecting all the mixes and final masters from each artist, deciding (with Toby the organiser) which work best, and which can be elegantly edited and tweaked in order to fit so many exciting contributions on, whilst retaining a pleasurable and balanced overall album experience. We want to avoid just throwing out a mish-mash of different styles without considering the continuity from which any album should benefit. I hope this fine tuning, along with so many great versions, will help to ensure 'Spirit Of Talk Talk' becomes one of the very best tribute albums ever made."

More news will follow in the next few weeks.

08/12/11 - New Talk Talk book and website - register now

Remember we brought you news that Recoil has recorded two covers for a forthcoming Talk Talk tribute album? Well we can now bring you much more news about the accompanying book which Alan has also contributed to, with its expected publication scheduled for Spring 2012.

'The Spirit of Talk Talk' is a richly illustrated, beautifully designed publication celebrating the music and art of the legendary group Talk Talk.

Celebrated illustrator, and Talk Talk cover artist, James Marsh has remastered and chronicled all of the iconic artwork that he produced for the band throughout their 10 year reign in the 80's. The book will feature James original cover concept sketches, hand written lyrics from Mark Hollis, as well as various ephemera, posters, and related items of interest to fans. It will also feature unseen group photos from 3 sessions with photographer Richard Haughton.

Renowned rock music writer and enormous Talk Talk fan Chris Roberts is writing the main essay and there are also 80 written contributions from bands, label owners, DJs and creatives, all of whom have been inspired or influenced by the music and art of Talk Talk.

Says Alan: "The Spirit of Talk Talk has been lovingly compiled with unqualified enthusiasm and meticulous research. It is the most comprehensive retrospective look at the legacy of one of Britain's most important, influential and inexplicably underrated bands. Long overdue and unmissable. Sign up now to register your interest and to get it published as soon as possible."

As Alan suggests, please visit the official website and register your interest. Registering does not commit you to purchase the book but simply helps the publisher gauge the print run required. You will be kept informed about developments right up to publication.

Finally, regarding the album, this is now very close to completion with a large array of eclectic artists involved. We will be bringing you more news on this very soon.

07/11/11 - 'FAN' - new film featuring Alan Wilder interview

Now available to view at YouTube, a brand new Polish film directed by Grzegorz Radziejewski has been released featuring interviews with Alan Wilder, Gareth Jones, Adrian Sherwood and many others.

Shot in Lodz, Poland between August 2009 & November 2010, the film focuses on trying to explain the subculture surrounding Depeche Mode and its followers, how that came into being and what it all means. Alan recorded his interview for Grzegorz at the Andels hotel in April 2010 when Recoil visited Lodz to present 'A Strange Hour'.

Says Radziejewski : "Initially, the general idea of the movie was to portray just the fans. It seemed relatively easy, but it was not! The troublesome issue was how to depict the fans without showing their beloved band? This problem was solved as the former DM member, Alan Wilder, came to Lodz. He agreed to a long interview. While working on the movie I was given a unique chance to speak with several other people who also worked closely with the band."

'FAN' is a non-commercial project made without any budget, just with a lot of love & desire. Here at Shunt, we feel Grzegorz's team has done a great job creating this heartfelt documentary - not dissimilar in approach to Jeremy Deller & Nick Abraham's 'The Posters Came From The Walls'.

On November 1st, Dentez Lab and Shunt will release a limited edition, remastered DVD of Martin Vladar's documentary film which accompanied the AW / DM historic equipment, vinyl and memorabilia auction.

04/10/11 - AW/DM 'Collected' film extra DVD?

Omega recently made available the last of the 'Collected' DVDs from the auction which sold out within a few hours. As these have proved so popular and to satisfy those who missed out, we are thinking of producing a better quality transfer of Martin Vladar's 'Collected' documentary on a brand new DVD, with additional content and all-new artwork in a cardboard sleeve. This would include some extra footage with Emax demos from Alan, other outtakes which never made the final cut, a film review of the day at Zion in Manchester and a photo gallery. All running at about one hour in total.

If you would be interested in purchasing something like this, let us know by either clicking 'like' or drop us an email at: shunt@recoil.co.uk so we can gauge how many to produce.

Rather than using eBay, we plan to open a new, user-friendly Recoil Official Store in order to fulfil any orders.

01/10/11 - Paul Kendall's new album 'Angleterror'

Paul Kendall has released a new album called 'Angleterror', available now as a digital download. Paul, as you all must know, has been working with Recoil for many years now and recently accompanied Alan on his 'Selected Events' tour presenting 'A Strange Hour' around the world. But this is a man of many talents, and you can view his new viral video right here (no doubt filmed and edited by Olivia Louvel) where he 'kind of' explains his latest project.

The majority of the work was created between 2002-2007 during Paul's sojourn in Paris and informs the title. We love it here at Recoil central and highly recommend Mr Kendall's manglings. A mere 8 quid for 5 years work can only be a bargain. Immediate download of 7-track album in your choice of MP3 320, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire. Go get...
